A typical German type, reflecting the spirit of the twenties, could by today compete in an international triumph: From Frankfurt to the spheres of the cosmos, the exhibition lays out the creation and the ways of distribution of FUTURA once around the globe. We show significant originals (design drawings, type samples, printed matters).
What was and what is the secret of success of this typeface that, newly adapted in different times and different - also political cultures, is up to today very distributed and well-known?
In order to answer these questions, the special exhibition in the Gutenberg-Museum in Mainz concentrates on one side on the genesis of the typeface. We present the design process and the laying-out of the various letters up to the gradual publication of the whole typeface family. Presenting design-historic original documents, we want to make understandable the motivations and decisions that have led to design modifications of single letters. On the other hand the reception history is being reappraised. We would like to suggest an answer to the question why this typeface, being rediscovered from the point of view of design, could gain international acceptance. Since the museum’s main emphasis is on type, we are very proud to present this special exhibition, in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Mainz.
An extensive catalogue will be published.
